American rock band formed in New York City in 1973, known for their role during the punk / new wave era, and now considered pioneers of indie and alternative rock. Led by guitarist / vocalist Tom Verlaine and guitarist Richard Lloyd, they stood out for their intricate, technically proficient guitar work and lengthy improvisations on their acclaimed 1977 debut album, Marquee Moon. The first band to have a residency at the CBGB club, their sound is a mix of punk energy with art rock, jazz-inspired guitar solos, and post-punk structures.
