The Great Wall of China is a massive, 21,196 km (13,171 mile) series of ancient fortifications, watchtowers and barriers, built across northern China over 2,000 years to protect against invasion by nomadic tribes such as the Xiongnu and Mongols, as well as to control trade routes. It is not a single, continuous wall but a network of walls, fortresses and horse tracks constructed from rammed earth, stones, and later, bricks. Many of the well-known sections were built during the Ming Dynasty 1368–1644.
