World War II-era U.S. facility that trained airmen to defend bombers from enemy fighter attacks by teaching skills with machine guns in preparation for combat. One of the largest was Las Vegas Army Air Field, Nevada, now called Nellis AFB, famously depicted on the iconic t-shirt worn by Corporal Alexander Le Gerda, on the cover of LIFE magazine, July 13, 1942.
